So the creators of DARQ decided so and added very unpleasant hostile creatures to the game. Luckily, not all of the puzzles in DARQ are adrenaline-pumping and thrilling. Especially when the reason to accelerate is seriously scary. Only moments that require the player to take very clear and well-considered actions are annoying when you need to solve the puzzle in a limited time. There are few items on the levels (this is not a full-fledged quest for you), and insight into what thing can be useful in one place or another comes pretty quickly. But you can’t call them too complicated and delusional either. The puzzles in DARQ don’t seem too easy, and you have to be really careful to find the solution. ![]() And we will also have to collect torn off alien arms and legs in order to use them in various mechanisms. Since the action of the game does not take place in reality, you should not be surprised that the pocket watch will magically increase in size and serve as a bridge for the hero, and the snake will replace the missing piece of wiring. We often have to keep track of the wires and the direction of the current, solve puzzles and use the objects found in unexpected places. The creation of Unfold Games can be called multifaceted in the truest sense of the word, because in fact the entire level and moving around it is one big puzzle. Learning new features is smooth and intuitive – DARQ seems to push the player herself and easily do without instructions. At the same time, mechanics do not replace each other, but accumulate like a snowball, giving rise to more and more complex puzzles. This mechanic will not have time to get bored, as another one will be added to it in the next chapter – for example, levers that move the character to different planes, or chains, pulling which rotates the entire location. In this way, he explores familiar spaces from a new perspective and discovers new locations and puzzles. So Lloyd in his nightmares can walk on the walls and ceiling, shifting gravity and turning entire rooms on their side. In a dream, people can do things that in ordinary life they cannot do. The game does not explain anything at all: there are no texts in it, at most the names of objects are signed. What is going on in his soul and why he is tormented by nightmares, we do not know and can only speculate. Our hero seemed to have descended from the poster of Burton’s cartoons – the same gloomy and big-eyed. All seven levels in the game are seven different dreams, crazy, surreal and sometimes quite frightening. ![]() Sleep here, of course, does not bring rest and relaxation, but, on the contrary, draws you into its sticky nets. It has no introductory videos, not even a main menu – we are immediately thrown into the apartment of the protagonist, who has no other options but to go to sleep. ![]() On the road to sleepĭARQ starts abruptly. But during the work on the project, the authors rethought their ideas a little and literally turned the idea of what puzzles in games could be. According to the initial concepts, the game was supposed to be very creepy and concentrated on how to properly scare the players, and the hero could even fly in it. ![]() The story of a downcast boy became the debut creation of the Los Angeles-based indie studio Unfold Games and has been in development for more than three years.
